In the next couple of weeks, I am really focusing on Spring cleaning.
It is always a little daunting, thinking of all of the work, but I sooo love the end result.
Organizing, cleaning out, giving away...it just makes me feel good!
Usually I "Spring clean" all year and just take a room a month and deep clean.
This year, life was busier and I am back to doing most of it at once.
They are made from old towels and lovely scraps of fabric.
{Do you find you need to replace towels in the Spring, too?}
I prefer to have absorbent cloths because when I clean...I really clean!
And these are not meant to be kept stain free...they are meant to be used!
I have other pretty towels that I save for drying dishes or my hands after cooking.
I want to emphasize that anyone can make these!
They are super duper simple, quick, and such a money saver.
{I don't use paper products in the kitchen at all.}

You will need:
old towels
several cotton fabric scraps at least 12x12 inches
you could also use old sheets, flannel shirts, or other cotton clothing for the top {use what you have on hand}
Cut a 12x12 inch square out of the towel and a matching piece of fabric.
Place together.
Sew about 1/2 inch all the way around, leaving the edges raw.
Wash, and the edges will fray nicely.
These cloths also make a nice gift for Moms...maybe even a new Mom with a little one?
If you want to add even more pretty things to your kitchen, you could try making my Everyday Napkins or Ruffled Dish Towel.
Happy Spring cleaning!

These are beautiful Julia. Genious! I'd sooo be making some if my machine weren't broken. (I'll keep them in mind for someday soon though!) :)
Oh - I have a towel I just put by my sewing machine because one end is so ratty. I can't wait to do this instead of just cutting it down.
Thanks!
Beautiful! I loved the frayed edges!

I am all over this like a bee on honey! I found a vintage sheet at a garage sale last fall. I've been saving it and I just dusted off my sewing machine to whip some cloth napkins from it and now, I'll add a few of these.
THANKS!
Great idea!! I love to 'redeem' things!
I have towels that have bleach stains on them or are ratty. Now I can redo them and use them again. And they look good too. What more can you ask for. Thanks so much.
This is such a clever and pretty idea! And quick!! I could really do this! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Lovely!! And yay for spring cleaning - I'm getting that fever, too ;)

HI Julia, I just found your blog from Pinterest and I'm so glad I did. Yesterday I was looking at my old dish cloths, thinking when am I ever going to get some new ones...these look so bad. But your idea is even better. I just love this. We live on a small farm in S. Calif. I'm always looking for ideas that I could use for our farmhouse and this one is great. Just love your blog and so glad I found you. come by for a visit when you get the chance.
Blessings,
Debbie
Wow . These cloths make me happy. But I don't sew. Maybe its time to start!
Great idea, Julie! You are so creative... not me so much... I will have to try that.... hmmmm, thinking here that would work from burp clothes for a baby, too....
What a wonderful way to make cleaning not only functional but beautiful as well.
What a inspiration and blessing you are!

Beautiful! Love this idea!
Julia,
You are such a clever, thrifty and creative farmwife. I like this idea a lot. I just bought some dishcloths for the kitchen sink. I should've tuned in earlier! Great idea.
What a GREAT idea! I think they are beautiful AND functional!
So cute... what a great idea!
Gorgeous! I just sewed some "not paper towels" out of an old flannel sheet yesterday.... Love how pretty yours look with fabric - especially as you say for a gift!
These are pretty...and fun!!
Now to whip me up some "elbow grease". :)
Julia,
I LOVE this. I bet even Millie could sew some of these. We get too many "old towells" thank you for sharing!
So sweet, Julia. Why ever not make cleaning as pleasant as possible? :) Thank you much for the inspiration.
Thanks for sharing! I found your site from pinterest and you have inspired me! Thank you!
I love this idea of recycling and it's a great sewing project for a beginner like me!! I think I will make some for my draining board aswell as for cleaning.
LOVE these! I'm going to have to make some of these with my fabric scraps. :)
I just made some of these for a shower gift... they are cute! They should brighten up their kitchen.
This would be a nice way to add some calico to the kitchen. I have a towel in mind. The frayed edges are a cute "country" touch.

Very cute idea! I stumbled upon this at Pinterest, and just spent the last half hour browsing your blog. I am adding it to my list of favorites. I especially enjoy the posts about preserving and gardening. I also agree with your philosiphy of simplifying and being content with what God has blessed us with. What a great blog!
i love this!!! I saw it on Cindy's blog and I followed on over. Tmro is my moms birthday...i'm going to make her some!!! :D
great idea! :)
I love all your cool ideas. Especially like to repurpose things. I can't wait to get to the sewing machine.

These are a great idea for repurposing old towels, etc. I do something similar but these are much nicer with the print fabric backing than how I use them and would last longer. I keep an empty tissue box under the sink and fill it with small pieces of old t-shirts, towels, washcloths, etc. to wipe up really dirty or greasy messes. Then I can toss them without any guilt. I rarely use papertowels. Thanks for another idea for using old items.
Finally, a use for my old ratty towels I have been wondering what to do with. I found this just in time for Christmas too, thanks so much!
Love this idea!
Thank you for sharing!
